Zeppelin
It was a day off. Zeppelin did not have any projects lately and took these small opportunities of free time to go out and get some fresh air. She had become acquainted with some of the locals by now, having been involved in a couple of acts of heroics as well as stopping to chat with them whenever she was out on one of her patrols. Stopping by the market on her walk, one of the shopkeepers recommended heading towards the docks. Apparently there was some sort of small festival for the local fishermen. Since she had nothing else to do, she figured it was a good chance to try her hand at the rod and reel. It was apparently a very relaxing past time enjoyed by those with a lot of patience. The experience might get her a bit closer to the people too

To say it was a small festival would be a bit of an understatement. While there were not many people crowding the docks, there were a number of small fishing boats out on the marina. The few who didn't have boats were all standing near the edge of the docks, casting their lines.

Zeppelin eventually spotted one of the festival organizers renting out fishing rods and selling bait. Paying the man, she went off to a rocky area to get in on the fishing action. She put down her bucket on the ground, put the bait on her hook, and cast her line the same way she saw the other fishermen do it. She had a knack for being able to imitate people's movements after just seeing them once. Sure enough she managed to drop her line a good distance away. She then sat down and waited for the fish to bite. The atmosphere was quite relaxing.

Appearance:

The island of Baterilla, located in the South Blue. It was home to many people, especially fisherman. The island's palm trees, fresh green grass, and bright blue sky gave off a relaxing, tropical atmosphere which would make anyone calm, not to mention the clear blue Marinia Lake. The people on this island were very friendly and also at peace. There were families out having a blast, couples taking a walk, hand in hand, and even the elderly can be seen on benches, feeding the local birds crumbs of bread. A gentle breeze blew by, causing the palm trees to rustle a bit in rhythm of the breeze.

Walking down one of the market districts of the island was a young seventeen year old boy wearing a black unzipped jacket with a white fur collar and white crosses on the shoulder parts of it. He wore a short sleeved white t-shirt underneath with a small necklace dangling over his neck with three silver crystals. He also wore navy blue pants with a chain attached to the right of it and black shoes with a white bottom. He had his prized possession longsword strapped to his back. He had black eyes, white spiky hair that blew a little in the breeze and an earring on his left earlobe. He stood at 5'5" with a slim but muscular build. He was the Revolutionary's Edward D. Smith.

Edward went from market stand to market stand, observing all of the different and even exotic artifacts being held on display. He was quite fond of a lot of the stuff, especially with the swords he saw at a local blacksmith's stand. But what caught Edward's attention the most was a stand selling grilled fish. Edward quickly ran to the stand where he was greeted by an elderly woman who was selling them.

"Hello there sonny. Would you care for a free sample?" the elderly woman politely offered to the Revolutionary to which he quickly nodded. Edward picked up one of the grilled fish on a stick, taking a bite out of it. His eyes widened as soon as that first bite met his tongue. He then proceeded to munch down the entire fish. "How much!?" Edward quickly said to the woman, talking about how much it costs to buy another grilled fish. After hearing the price, Edward's enthusiastic look quickly turned into a grim, disappointed kind. He sighed a little, knowing that he didn't have enough belis to pay for any. He could try stealing one, but even Edward was above robbing the elderly, especially kind, sweet ones like herself also he was terrible at robbing people to begin with. She would then tell Edward about this festival going on for the local fisherman which would be a good opportunity to catch some fish of his own.

Edward darted down to the location of the festival, Marina Lake. This lake was filled with fishing boats and people fishing out in the lake with others on the dock. The white haired boy rented a fishing line and proceeded to the docks next to girl who was sitting down, already waiting for the fishes to bite.

Edward had the fishing line out and bucket full of bait, ready for some fishing. He couldn't wait to sink his teeth into another one of those fishes. There was just one thing....He doesn't have the slightest clue on how to fish. He waved the fishing rod towards the lake, not exactly sure what to do. "Uhh..." he stood there with a puzzled look on his face. He then kneeled down placing his free hand on the edge of the deck to look closer at the water. He then proceeded to dip the rod halfway into the water, swirling it around a little.

"Umm...Fish!...Come to me?" he said with a puzzled look on his face.

As Zeppelin waited for the fish to bite, she was joined by a young man probably in his teens who looked like he was a novice to fishing too. In the same way that for strong people there was always someone out there who was more skilled, for new comers, there was always someone who was less adept at figuring things out. She watched as the boy waved the fishing rod around for a bit and then eventually sit down and try dipping it in the water. She found this behavior a bit puzzling as there were more than enough fishermen in the area to observe and watch how it was done. Perhaps he was just the impatient sort. In any case, it would probably be to her benefit to intervene before his actions actually scare the fish away.

"You are not from around here are you?" She spoke in a friendly-formal tone. "Let me be the first to say that you are not going to be catching any fish that way. On the contrary, you might even drive them off."

She set down her rod for the moment and walked over to the boy's bucket where the unused bait lay waiting. "For starters, you will need to put some bait at the end of your fishing line. Come on over. I'll show you how it's done."

His poor fishing skills aside, the kid also stood out with his appearance. In particular, the sword on his back was not the kind that just anyone could wield. In that day and age, people walking around with weapons wasn't too unusual, but it was still a bit surprising sometimes to see boys too young to drink carrying them. This is coming from someone who has seen her fair share of new recruits turning up at Marine bases. Occasionally they got applicants who didn't meet the cut age-wise. The young swordsman reminded her of those times.

One of Edward's eyes began to twitch as he continued to wave his fishing rod in the water as an attempt to catch fish. Edward was a pretty simple minded person when it came to the most simplest of things like a small child, but he does have his moments. This however wasn't one of those moments. He was indeed in a rush to get some of that delicious fish that he didn't even check around to see how the other skilled fishermen were catching their fish. The Revolutionary sighed softly, attempting to not lose his cool, especially on an island filled with marines.

"You are not from around here are you?" a feminine voice said to the teen in a formal and friendly tone, causing Edward to lose his concentration. He then turned his face towards where the voice was coming from. The first thing Edward saw when he turned his head was not the woman's face, but her bust which caused the spiky haired teen to blush a little with a surprised expression on his face. "U-uhh..." was all he could say as he continued to stare for a little before quickly shaking his head to snap out of his little trance.

"Let me be the first to say that you are not going to be catching any fish that way. On the contrary, you might even drive them off." was what she said after before getting up and walking towards white haired teen's bucket of bait. Edward's head followed her movements even though he was still a bit dazed from staring at the woman's features. As she began to talk about how he would need to use the bait in order to catch the fish, it finally hit him. That woman was wearing a marine like uniform which caused Edward's eye's to lower a little.

Edward looked up into her eyes, staring at her for a few seconds. She had a beautiful face and an overall nice aura. She was even willing to help out a complete stranger, but he couldn't let his guard down. She was one of them, a marine who are nothing but corrupted scum that use their power to intimidate the weak in Edward's eyes. His expression was a bit more tensed now than before, but he couldn't let her notice it. "Is that right?" he asked in a soft tone, as his eyes drifted to the bait then to the rod before looking back up to the woman, trying his hardest to keep his cool, clenching his free hand before unclenching it as he rested it on the dock.

The ever perceptive Marine was would not miss the roller coaster shifting of moods that occurred within the span of just a few seconds. At first there was the usual nervousness that would typically accompany those who met her for the first time. She had grown accustomed to this and at some point it became a sort of gauge to figuring out the kind of person the other party was. But the anxiousness did not last very long. Well actually, it was replaced with an anxiousness of a different kind. The feeling of tension was unmistakable though the kid tried to keep his cool. She couldn't help but try to figure out what exactly set him off in her mind. Was it something she said? Probably not. His reaction was rather delayed. If he was annoyed at the idea of being assisted, he would have been tense from the start. So it must have been something he realized as they went on.

"Here, let me have that for while." She reached for the end of the line where the hook for the bait was and then proceeded to properly apply the bait on it. "You should loosen up a bit. Not everyone gets the hang of it on their first try. Patience is key to fishing."

Common courtesy would dictate that she would not directly pry regardless of how curious she was. In a way it was also an act of respect for how hard the boy was trying to keep his cool despite his emotions. Perhaps a relaxing time of proper fishing will help lighten his mood. She was willing to help him experience some of that. He might even feel open enough to talk about what was bothering him after that. Though she had a nagging feeling it would still be unlikely.

"There you go." She handed the line back with the bait properly placed on it.

What could this Marine possibly want from him, Edward thought to himself. He didn't cause any trouble lately. Could she be trying to manipulate the young Revolutionary? What if she knows he's part of the Revolutionary Army? No, that can't be possible. Edward may be destructive, but he has yet to stand out enough to get any attention like that. Either way, he had to keep calm but also be cautious in case she tries anything.

"Here, let me have that for while." was what the marine woman said, breaking the silence as she reached out for the end of his line causing Edward to hesitate a little before letting her have it. He was clearly doing a terrible job at hiding how tense he was at the moment, but he just couldn't help it. His very first encounter with a Marine ended in an extremely horrible way. He never cared much for the Marines nor the World Government in the beginning, but what happen to him and former friend changed his entire view on them forever. True evil is what he saw behind their pledge of justice.

He didn't even pay attention to her applying the bait. He was focused on her eyes, her other actions. He was in a bit of a trance with all he can see is a corrupted monster glaring back at him. There was a burning sensation deep in Edward's chest. It was a mixture of anger and fear as he balled up one of his fists, preparing for a fight.

The sudden sound of her saying, "There you go." was enough to snap him out of his little trance. He blinked his eyes a few times as he looked to her before looking back down to the fishing rod that she fixed for him. "Th-thanks?" he said to her both questionably and a bit distant as if he were just off in another world before taking the rod from her. He inspected the rod for a few seconds before looking around, watching the other fisherman which is what he should've done in the beginning. He then mimicked what he saw and casted the line out into the water as he sat there, waiting.

Edward glanced up at the Marine before looking out to the water. "You're a Marine...correct?" he asked the woman as he continued looking out towards the water, watching it sway back and fourth slowly in harmony with the breeze.

Zeppelin continued to maintain her professional smile the entire time even as it became evident that the boy's tenseness and anxiety were directed towards her. At one point he even balled up one of his fists. Something was deeply bothering this lad, so much that it would not be out of the question for him to start a fight right there. Naturally she didn't want to have to do so. She was out there to enjoy nature and fishing. And from how eager the kid was earlier, clueless as he was on what to do, he was also there without any intention of causing trouble. Thus she felt a bit responsible that after starting this conversation with him, the mood changed very abruptly and not for the better.

As she handed the line back to the boy, it looked as though he was snapped back into reality from being lost in his thoughts. She could pick up hints of uncertainty and confusion as if he had conflicting ideas in his head. And though one side was very much willing to engage in conflict, the other side was trying its hardest to keep things under control. It was a good effort. Though the kid felt a bit more distant, he kept his calm and actually paid attention to his surrounding this time, looking to the other fishermen to find out what to do next. She almost felt lonely that he didn't just ask her who was just there waiting to see what he would do.

Zeppelin's thoughts would be answered when the boy finally attempted to converse a bit more and the riddle that had been plaguing her mind would be given a possible hint. He asked if she was a Marine. There were several ways of interpreting this. If he was the honest type, then more than likely the question was related to what was bothering him. The other possibility was that he was directing attention away from his problem. But the young lieutenant's experience would tell her it was more likely the former. The fact that he had trouble hiding his feelings meant that he wasn't used to deceit and misdirection. In any case, if Zeppelin being a Marine was the source of all of his anxiety, then she feared the worst. Did he have some reason to hate or fear Marines? She had already established earlier that it didn't look like he was from around here. But she wasn't the type to take action just from this. Even on the chance that he was an enemy, she had no reason to treat him as such unless he initiated something first.

"Yes, that's right. Lieutenant Zeppelin, at your service." She stood back up and accompanied her introduction with a quick salute and a warm smile. "Pardon my rudeness for not introducing myself earlier."

Edward briefly glanced at the marine before looking out towards his fishing line, giving a small smirk from what he believed was a cheesy, cliché introduction. He's seen it all before. Acting polite, professional and acting as if they were a friend, only to rear their ugly face in the end. His smirk went away and was replaced by a much more colder expression as he continued to look out into the water, waiting for the fish to bite or something. "Didn't ask for your name nor position....." he coldly said to Zeppelin.

Edward gripped his fishing rod more as he began to have flashbacks of two little children in a dark alley in the middle of the night. One was a little boy with white spiky hair who was down on the ground, completely bruised, struggling to keep his head up and the other was a girl with short black hair who had her back against the end of the alley, trembling violently in fear with a tall figure towering over the two, wearing a Vice Admiral coat. The figure pulled out a knife and approached the girl, holding her up by the collar with his free hand and the knife against her neck. The Vice Admiral grinned sadistically before the sound of horrifying screaming can be heard as blood splattered on the ground by the bruised boy.

The screaming combined with the sudden shaking of the fishing rod snapped Edward out of it. He kept a firm grip on the rod even though his hands were violently shaking as he stared out into the water with terror. Edward gulped, his breathing grew a little heavy before realizing that he caught something. He stopped shaking and began to pull his hardest to get the bite. He must've caught something big if it was giving him this much of a fight. The Revolutionary stood up on his feet so he could pull better. Finally! He was able to reel it in. But, to his disappointment, he caught what pretty much could be the tiniest fish in the water, wiggling on the hook to get free.

Edward's eyes lowered in an annoyed expression as the sound of some people laughing could be heard in the background. Edward looked like he was about to say something but instead took a deep breathe and took the still wiggling tiny fish from the hook and gently placed it back into the water, smiling a little. Normally, stuff like this and people laughing at him would result in Edward losing his temper but he was currently distracted by multiple things at this moment.

The sound of children laughing can be heard. Edward slowly turned his head to see two kids who appeared to be playing tag, one boy the other a girl. This caused Edward's small smile to grow a little wider as he watched them for a little. As his head followed the kids, he ended up facing the marine again, jumping back a little as he almost forgot that she was still there. His smile quickly went away as he glanced off at some grass, acting as if he weren't just smiling.

"Oh....you're still here?" he said with a groan. "Look, Marine. I know I look good or whatever, but that doesn't give you the right to stare..."

After running through the events that day that have happened thus far in her head, Zeppelin came to the conclusion that she had not personally done anything to earn the ire of someone she did not know. Rather, the kid was a genuine Marine-hater, for whatever reason he was choosing not to reveal. She was not a stranger being disliked. Any pirates or revolutionaries she put behind bars certainly expressed their loathing of her without reservations. Even among the Marine ranks she could tell there was at least one person higher up who felt it was a good idea to put her on missions that would be impossible for the average soldier. She had yet to fail though. In any case, as far a being hated on while she was off duty, this was probably the first ever occurrence for her. And she certainly can't take any action against someone just expressing their opinion, nor did she even want to. It does however pique her curiosity as, being a Marine, she definitely prefers to be viewed in a good light by the people.

"I was just being polite. It's common courtesy to introduce oneself in situations like this."

She smiled again before moving back to her spot to resume her fishing. At this point she didn't really expect him to return the gesture. Surprisingly, the boy has having a bit more luck than her despite his initial screw-ups and managed to hook one before she did. It was a small catch but still better than zero. She quietly praised his success in her mind. It was around this time that she received further cold treatment from the lad and it was really starting to make her wonder what kind of past experience he had with Marines that he would harass one of the blue without any provocation. Perhaps it was time to do a different kind of fishing.

"I was just thinking how it was great you managed to catch something. It seems you're much luckier than I am. I've been at this spot for a bit longer than you have and I have yet to get a bite."

No sooner had she spoken these words when she felt a sharp tug at the end of her line. The actions that followed were her executing exactly what she had read in a fishing book to reel in whatever it was on the other end. It wasn't anything extraordinary, but an average-sized fish would still be noticeably better than the small one the kid caught earlier. Fate was not very good at picking the best timing for things like this. Suddenly her attempt at being humble was seemingly canceled out.

"I guess I still do have a reason to think that this is a good spot to fish. You should stop being so tense and enjoy it. Leave your worries at home. And if you can't, well... I'm off duty but, as Marine, I consider it to be part of my commitment to the people to listen to their worries if they have any."

Edward glared at Zeppelin as she explained why she was looking at him. Her attempts at praising him only caused the boy to roll his eyes before turning back to the water, throwing his line back out at an attempt to catch a bigger fish. At the corner of his eye, he noticed that the marine woman was trying to reel in her line, most likely getting a catch of her own. He turned his head all the way around to her when he noticed that the fish Zeppelin caught was of a bigger size than his catch. All this did was further anger the boy which can be clearly seen on his face with a mixture of surprise and even a little bit of praise. He quickly turned his head back towards the water as the marine began to speak.

How could he possibly stop himself from being tense around a Marine? Marine's are nothing but corrupted monsters who do whatever they want because there is no one to stop them since they have the World Government backing them up. Or at least that is what Edward thinks to which he has a good reason to. Leave his worries at home? How can he relax when there are monsters still roaming this world like the World Government? There will be no time to rest and relax completely until the tyranny that is the World Government and the Marines are brought to its knees. Edward gritted his teeth as he thought about those things and listened to Zeppelin's attempts of trying to get on his good side, trying to be a friend.

"Why don't you cut the crap." he said with his voice lowered but can still feel the anger underneath his soft tone. He could've yelled and made a scene like he usually would do, but after taking a good look around the island and down at these docks, he could see how peaceful it was. He didn't want to ruin this. He didn't want to ruin how the children were playing nor did he want to ruin all of these friendly people's fishing, but he wanted to make sure that the marine woman heard him clear.

"You and your "comrades" sit on a pillar of lies. You lock up and....murder innocent people. You all just spread lies to innocent people like these, talking about that crap you call "justice" when it is nothing but bullshit used to get away with the real stuff you and your World Government do behind these poor people's backs. Your are hear claiming that you want to listen to my problems just to find a way to exploit it. To get a good ass excuse to either throw me in a prison or torture me to death." he said as he squinted his eyes shut, gripping on to the fishing rod hard before he continued to talk.

"You all are nothing but monsters...." he said, sniffing a little as he tried to hold in his tears. Him forcing himself to keep in his anger and violent nature instead brought out another emotion, sadness.

The truth finally came out. At some point in the boy's life, he encountered a grave tragedy involving the Marines and he either witnessed or experienced for himself unwarranted cruelty and abuse. Cool and calm as the lieutenant was, it was still heavy on her heart to hear that people under the same organization could be capable of such monstrous deeds. Alas even without the kid telling him so, she was already quite aware that such things have happened. Those who would oppose the government would cite precisely abuse of power as one of the reasons they fought to overthrow them. This would be the first time however that she encountered someone who was a victim of this first hand.

The Marines were not infallible. Zeppelin had her own share of failures to accomplish the best result she hoped for, despite her talents. Though she had yet to obtain solid proof of it, she too experienced the unjust wielding of power that put her in a life-threatening situation more than once. However the hierarchy that the organization follows made it difficult to investigate the higher-ups. There was only so much she could do at her current rank and it became clear she had to move up to accomplish more. It was one of the things that served as her motivation to climb even higher.

She found herself sighing audibly. "That's unfortunate. But as much as I would love to refute your claims, it is the harsh reality that this organization is plagued with corruption, as with any group holding power. Someone somewhere always ends up letting authority get to their heads and use it for their selfish whims."

"It's very difficult. Even when one tries their best to be upstanding and and to advocate the justice we claim to stand for, there's just no denying that others either don't feel the same way or have twisted their beliefs into something worse than they very evils we fight. And in the end, everyone has to take responsibility for it."

She set down her fishing rod, stood up and bowed her head slightly.

"I apologize for my arrogance. Whatever burden you are bearing seems to be beyond what I am capable of carrying, at least the way I am now. However despite the little weight my words might have in your eyes, allow me to say that just as there are wrongdoers in any organization, there are also those whose convictions and commitments remain true to the justice we were meant to advocate. Perhaps this is again arrogant of me, but I would like to think I am one of those who strive to keep this ideal and genuinely work for the common good. Someday if we ever meet again, I hope I can still hold my head high knowing I've stayed true to these ideals."
